debian and girlfriends

I love Debian as a GNU/Linux distribution, as a project, as a group of people, and as a social movement. That said, it should come as no surprise that I've installed Debian on 3 out of my 4 last girlfriends' computers.

Many romantic relationships also end of rough terms so it should also be unsurprising that I've had rather nasty break-ups with 3 out of my 4 last girlfriends.

What worries me is that the two groups correspond perfectly.

You don't want your boyfriend/girlfriend relationship to transmute to a teacher/student one, but unless they already know Linux1, that's exactly what will happen when you do that. So don't.

One of the cardinal rules for relationships is Do Not Touch The Other Person's Computer. I would sooner use my wife's toothbrush than change her operating system.

1Which is unlikely, you said they are girls.

What are you talking about? (5.00 / 1) (#13)
by quartz on Mon Jan 13, 2003 at 10:40:31 AM EST

My wife practically begged me to install Linux + Emacs + Latex + Fortran + Assorted Miscellaneouses on her computer and admin it for her. And she's a lot happier with her Linux box at home than with her Sun at work (where they have an admin who says things like "I couldn't install Solaris 9 on your brand spanking new Blade 150 because of a hardware conflict, so I put Solaris 8 on it which will make it crash  every 30 minutes for no reason, but don't tell me because I'll just blame it on the UPS." -- well, not literally, but you get the idea).

by ocelotbob on Mon Jan 13, 2003 at 10:39:59 AM EST

I'm a linux user, and I've certainly had sex. I'd have more, but unfortunately, my hon is a bit too far away for the standard booty call. Anyone who thinks otherwise just needs to use their awkward geek charm, and be a bit of a flirt. Humor really helps here. As does being able to sequester most of the computer stuff elsewhere while company's over.

Why... in my day, the idea wasn't to have a comfortable sub[missive]...

by lorcha on Mon Jan 13, 2003 at 10:16:42 AM EST

... have reached an understanding. If she doesn't bitch about her computer crashing every 45 minutes, I won't ever mention the 'L-word' around her. Seriously, man. As others have mentioned, you do not fucking try to mix girls and Linux. That is just wrong in so many ways it's not even funny.

The least you coulda done is give her Mandrake. Sheesh.

My wife is a (very) novice computer user. She's perfectly happy on Linux, and I still get laid every once in a while.

by makohill on Tue Jan 14, 2003 at 04:44:26 AM EST

MAME emulates all the games that Snood was based off. I'm sure there are other Snood clones out there for GNU/Linux as well.

by ryochiji on Mon Jan 13, 2003 at 05:41:08 PM EST

I convinced my ex-girlfriend (when we were still together) to dump her PC and get an iBook.  She was very happy with her iBook, but a year or so later, dumped me for a different model.

No correlation... I don't think.

You must introduce them to BSD, not linux. You should know better. Haven't you seen the 'BSD CHIX' pictures?
