What about Linux?

Linux is the name of a free software project started by Finnish graduate student Linus Torvalds.

Linux is a kernel: a system command processor and one of the most important pieces of software in every operating system.

Linux was combined with the work of the Richard Stallman's GNU project and work from AT&T, University of California Berkley, and many volunteers to create a complete operating system.

The term Linux is now used (inaccurately) to describe operating Free/Open Source operating systems based around the Linux Kernel. It is the largest and most successful — but by no means the only — project of its kind.
