The Gates are a major work of art by Christo and Jeanne-Claude installed into Central Park in New York City for sixteen days during February, 2005. A major attraction, millions have come from around the world to see the work. For the majority of them, cameras were in hand. Using video cameras, digital cameras, film cameras, and even cell-phone cameras, visitors each tried to capture a bit of the experience for themselves. This collection of photographs attempts to capture the experience of attempting to capture experience and blurs the distinction between artists and the artwork. These pictures are not staged. Most of the subjects did not realize we were pointing our cameras at anything other than the saffron flags. |
